Combination Standard Open End Wrench

Combination Standard Open end wrench

You can notice the combination standard open-end wrench a great similarity with a standard 12 point combination wrench and a standard 6 point combination wrench. The combination of open-end wrench features with either a “closed-end” or “an opened end”. The open-end wrench describes itself clear that the heads must be with one option. Closed-end or open-end. These types of wrenches do not have two different heads. However, the design of the two open ends will face opposite directions that offer more utility from your wrench.

However, speaking of sizes, the combination standard open-end wrenches also maintain the wrench sizes in order. So they come in different orderly sizes that range from 1/4 inch to 2 inches. The good news is you can find the open-end wrench in both of the options; a standard size set or a metric size set.

Combination Standard Short Wrench

Combination Standard short end wrench

In this article, we have already discussed different sizes of wrenches and their uses. The combination standard short wrench features the best by accessing hard-to-reach spaces. While other combination wrenches are unable to reach narrow places, the combination short wrench can help you out from the situation.

Due to its shorter handle, this combination standard wrench is an effective tool to work in tight or confined spaces. While a long-handled wrench fails to work in such tight spaces, this short-handled combination wrench would be your only chance to get the job done. There is only one drawback in these types of wrenches which is they provide less torque and power as they are smaller in size.

So, you know now – what are wrench sizes? Wrench sizes in order to help you choose the right wrench quickly.

Wrench Size Conversion Chart (SAE to Metric)

Once you have learned the wrench sizes in order, this is high time you learned the wrench conversions. The conversion would be SAE to MM. it is true that without knowing properly wrench size in order conversion you cannot determine which size of wrench you would need.

Manufacturers from all over the globe manufacture nuts and bolts following some standard size and those are shipped everywhere in the world. You know- the nuts and bolts are produced in different sizes. Most importantly there are two common systems to measure the sizes; Metric sizes and Standard sizes. You may know, Metric sizes are used millimeters as the measurement unit, while standard sizes are measured in inches. Knowing both the systems is important because you may need to toggle between them sometimes.

Besides, a professional worker knows how incorrect wrench size can be harmful to the head edges of nuts and bolts. It may round off of the square bolt head edges. So, it is indeed necessary to choose the right wrench while working on any project.

Wrench Size Chart for Bolts

We have given adequate information about the wrench size chart for bolts on the above. Nevertheless, you can also follow this chart too. This chart will help you choose the right size of wrenches for your project. Without a correct size of a wrench, a nut or bolt’s head’s edge can round off. So, choosing the proper size of a wrench for the bolt or nut is important.

What are SAE wrench sizes?

SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers. It denotes a wrench size of a standard size. The wrench head size can be measured in two ways; standard system and metric system. In this case, SAE mentions the standard size of a wrench head. A standard size wrench is measured by “inches” while a metric size wrench is measured by millimeters. You should know, standard wrench sizes range from 1/4 inch to 2 inches. However, the jumbo combination box set wrench can range from 2 inches to 4 inches.

How are wrench sizes measured?

The closed end of a wrench head consists of a hexagonal shape. You can see the distances from one flat side to the hexagon’s adjacent flat side. This is called a spanner. Knowing about spanners is important because a standard wrench’s head is usually measured by its spanner dimension. For example, if you pick a 2-inch standard wrench, it means the measurement of 2 inches would be from parallel flat sides on the hexagonal wrench head.

How do you figure out your wrench size?

Figuring out the right and proper wrench to adjust a bolt or nut for your project can be a challenge. Measure the bolt size if you want to know which size wrench is appropriate for the nut or bolt you are going to fasten or unfasten.

First off, measure the diameter of the nut/bolt and then multiply it by 1.5. For example, if the bolt measures 1/2″ or .5 inches across, multiply the number now by 1.5 and you will get the answer. So, .5 multiplying by 1.5 results in 0.75 which can be told 3/4 of an inch. So, to adjust a .5” bolt size, a 3/4 inch wrench will be required.

Remember, this calculation is applicable and valid for both metric and standard bolt sizes.

Do you need both standard and metric wrenches?

Bolts or nuts are supplied all over the world. So, manufacturing can take place anywhere on the globe. For example, if you purchase a furniture set from Europe and brought it to the USA, you must have to have a good idea of both systems. If you have only standard-size wrenches, you can convert it to the metric system and vice versa. But yes, to find the exact match every time, having both sets of wrenches would be great.

Final Words

Knowing wrench sizes in order is very essential especially when you are a DIY project manager or a professional. Finding out the exact wrench for a nut is difficult sometimes if there are various types of nuts and bolts on the project. Purchasing a complete set that helps you figure out the wrench sizes in order and pick the right one quickly. So, the answer to the question of what are wrench sizes is clear now. Having standard wrench sizes in order would be a quick success for your project.
